Packs and print information and codes starting a special roll of material where pre-made packages , are placed.
Product feeding can be made: manually in case of groups of products, or kits, semi-automatic for ampoules, vials, blister, small bottles and also fully automatic for blister, ampoules, vials and small bottles, with operator doing other jobs meanwhile the machine is working, giving you a multitasking operator.

3A – Automatic Ampoule Feeder

Loads up to 200 ampoules in the container, the machine inserts the product into the package automatically, no operator needed.

Speed: 2600 ampoules or vials per hour.

It has 5 different sizes and ways to feed ampoules from 0,5 to 10 mL and vials up to 25 mm of diameters.

Easily connects to Opus 30 machine, with set up time of 1 minute.


AB – Automatic Blister Feeder

It can be loaded up to 400 cut blisters in the funnel and the machine re-packs with no operator needed.

The unit dose repackaging speed in automatic mode is up to 2,200 doses per hour.

This equipment for pharmacy automation packages and prints a batch of drugs to be send to stock, where afterward the patient prescription is grouped with other drugs to attend administration at some time of the day.

Opus 30X unit dose equipment is the evolution of models working at more than 450 hospitals in Brazil and others countries.

Starting from a roll of pre-made package machine packages the drug being converted into unit and printing the necessary identification information plus alerts and advice with text or pictures in order to reduce Adverse Events at administration of drug process. Seven colors of materials are used for differentiation of LASA drugs.

This process works at 2,600 units per hour, that is 7 times faster than manual unitarization.

Set up time for changing size is less than 3 minutes. One machine can package pills, vials, small flasks and kits with several products.

Usually, the equipment pays itself in less than 6 months.

Small size and wheels make it easy to accommodate to any space.

Packages and prints drug in units able to handle at the hospital (unit-dose system). Also packages kits.

This machine convert in units and packages batches of medicine drugs to be sent to stock, and later collected with other drugs grouping them to attend each patient doses.

Operator may work with the machine in Mode: manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic.

At Manual Mode the operator inserts the product like kits or small flasks directly on the pouch next to be sealed and closed. Speed depends on product and operators skill.

At Semi- Automatic Mode, that is the most common, the product is inserted on a disk. You can unitarize vials and blisters this way with the help of four sizes of disks. It`s the most adequate mode to work with small batches, normally as low as 50 units. The set up time for a different size of product and different printing is less than 3 minutes. Speed is 2,600 units per hour.

Automatic mode for vials is up to 10 mL. Speed is the same than semi-automatic, but in this Mode the operator doesn’t need to insert the product continuously. It is possible to lead up to 240 vials of small size and let the machine working while the operator makes other jobs next to the equipment. The operator has more free time. Some plastic vials other than round shape are not possible to do automatically.

Measures: 1,05 m at the front and 0,65 m deepness. Mounted on wheels.

How to save two times the equipment value each year

Several advantages of automation of unit dose process such as more free time of pharmaceutical. Free space and less problems with personnel are not considered because they are subjective issues and prone to discussions.

We will consider only three issues:

The following calculations are only valid for a 200 beds hospital, but can be escalated by the number of beds.

    1. Less personnel at unit dose process.

The speed of manual process is of 350 unitarizations per hour. Opus 30X packages and prints 2.600 units per hour. This size of hospital is normally doing 80.000 unitarizations per month. Half part are pills and the other half are vials. Requirement for manual process is no less than 3 people. With Opuspac, only one person can manually cut the blister and repackage with Opus 30X machine in one shift. Economy savings of two operators range from u$s 1,800 up to 8,000 depending on cost of salaries and taxes. Let’s use for this case a value of u$s 2,200

    1. Less inventory deviations.

Having a high production output with Opuspac, the medicaments arrive to the hospital and in a couple of hours are converted into units. Commercial packages are immediately destroyed which eliminates the value of medicament at the market outside the hospital. Mean value of stock deviation is 3% at several countries and institutions. Some Opuspac’s customers work with figures as low as 0.2 % of deviation. If only 1 % reduction of deviation is considered then the same amount is saved of purchase cost. Evaluating u$s 400,000 monthly purchase the economy is u$s 4,000 per month.

  1. Less Adverse Events in drug administration and dispensing.

A mean value, according to OMS, 10% of health care processes have one error and 50% of them are preventable. According to Bates, 30% of hospital incidents are related to medication process (prescription, dispensing and drug administration). No less than 30% of them are related to drug administration and 50% have moderated or serious damage. Considering that those adverse events are having an extension of hospital permanence of 3 days at regular cost, the following additional expense due to EA, for a 200 bed hospital with 80% occupation rate, is:

(200 x 80% x 30 days) x (10% x 50%) x (30% x 30 %x 50%) x 3 days x u$s 1,250 /day = u$ 40,500 /month

If only we can save 10% of this amount using the tools of the Opus System, then we can save:

U$S 4,050 / month due to improving the patient`s safety.

The total value of saving is: 2,200 + 4,000 + 4,050 = u$s 10,250 / month.

Discounting the additional cost of packaging material for this hospital size as: u$s 1,250

Synchronization between the Information Technology (IT) department of the hospital,printer and the equipment is highly convenient despite it is possible to work “off-line”.

The name of the drug, concentration, validity time, batch code, name of manufacturer and amount of drugs received is information that could be taken from Invoice at hospital entrance. The IT department issues a linear or 2D bar code number in order to use internally at the hospital.

When printer and IT system through the ERP program are synchronized, all this information is automatically loaded at the printer and operator only has to select it.

Opuspac uses Markem Imaje printer. This American supplier is the largest in the market. Opuspac’s personnel help and guide, by phone, the IT professional in order to speed the process of printer synchronization.

Each drug is related to a specific layout printing, including alerts, advices, figures, information on route of administration. Opuspac created more than 50 different layouts with this information. IT department also sends the instruction to which layout to use and merge with the other information on the invoice. Opuspac sends information of layout with alerts and graphics for 700 drugs. This is a reference and professional at the pharmacy customize it to local requirements.

For those who are to work “off line” Opuspac supplies the software Opus 5.0 that includes a database with all the information about drugs and layouts.

Equipment capacity:

  • Using a roll of pre-made packaging the equipment packages and prints the unit-dose. One side of package is opaque white and the other is crystal transparent. Printing is made on the white side.
  • Seven different colors of rolls are available in order to drugs LASA (look alike and sound alike). Color print is on crystal side.
  • Package is compressed previously to be closed by welding in order to exhaust almost all air inside, in order to reduce its volume.
  • Package size of 60 x 60 mm is used for pills. Two sizes of feeding discs are available for this.
  • Package size of 60 x 100 mm is used for vials up to 3 mL. One disc is available for this size.
  • Package size of 70 x 130 mm is used for vials for more than 3mL. One disc available for this size.
  • Package sizes of 90 x 150 and 90 x 200 mm are used for small bottles and kits with several products like: syringe, cotton, vial, needle, etc.
  • Machine IHM is 5.5” color touch screen. Instructions for operator to change formats and resolve alarms are given with inductive logic through pictures and written explanation on the screen.
  • Two safety systems are installed, one for the product and other for the operator, following strict international rules.
  • Eleven alarms control all functions.
  • Machine is mounted on wheels with blocking devices.
  • Power consumption is 1,400 watts; 220 volts, 60 Hz, single phase (also works with 50 Hz).
  • Printer: thermo transfer printing from ribbon to substrate with 300 dpi of quality.
  • Continuous printing in a maximum size of 53 x 100 mm.
  • Can print bar codes, text, JPG or bitmap files.
